City leaders blast CHS move to fire Bauer
Brian Bauer has been fired from his CEO job with Lutheran Health Network and Lutheran Hospital, officials announced late Monday.
Aaron Garofola, CEO of Dupont Hospital, resigned his position Monday and accepted a lateral move within the parent company.
Bauer, who was named the network’s CEO in 2013, has been caught between Lutheran staff and parent company Community Health Systems in recent months.
Lutheran network staff has complained publicly about what it describes as neglect by the Franklin, Tennessee-based company. And a group of 10 local doctors has pushed CHS to sell its ownership stake in Lutheran Health Network to a private equity group.
Through it all, local doctors and staff have strenuously supported Bauer, including writing an op-ed piece published Sunday in The Journal Gazette. The staff’s loyalty to Bauer might have been too enthusiastic because CHS officials weren’t satisfied that Bauer was loyal to them.
“Bauer has made meaningful contributions over the past several years, but current circumstances put him in an untenable position and he is unable to continue in his leadership role,” CHS said in an email.
The decision was met with tears by some Lutheran staff and condemned by state and local leaders.
