Indiana Ranks Poorly for Health Indicators

According to The Alliance for a Healthier Indiana, a not-for-profit group made up of advocates from across Indiana who are committed to improving the health of our state, Indiana ranks between 35th and 49th highest in drug deaths, infant mortality, obesity, tobacco smoking and investment in public health. The Alliance’s founding members include the Indiana Hospital Association, Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Indiana State Medical Association, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana, and the Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health. Their first target will be the $8 billion cost of tobacco to the Hoosier State. The full report can be found here:

Tattoo pigments act as nanoparticles in human body

NICHE has no medical policy regarding tattoos except to acknowledge that it’s easier to get one than to remove it. However, recent study by the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (…/2017-09-nanoparticles-tattoos-circulate-…) includes an analysis of tattoo pigment behavior at the nanoparticle, cellular level, below the micro level. No evidence has been available prior to this study regarding the fate of pigments other than visual evidence of particles in lymph nodes. From the study:

“The elements that make up the ink in tattoos travel inside the body in micro and nanoparticle forms and reach the lymph nodes, according to a study published in Scientific Reports on 12 September by scientists from Germany and the ESRF, the European Synchrotron, Grenoble (France). It is the first time researchers have found analytical evidence of the transport of organic and inorganic pigments and toxic element impurities as well as in depth characterization of the pigments ex vivo in tattooed tissues. Two ESRF beamlines were crucial in this breakthrough.”
